Management, Treatment and Prevention…a Conversation about People who have Committed Sex Offenses

We are all interested in ending sexual violence. We know that ending the harm is high on the agendas of those working with victim/survivors, those working in sex offender treatment; and those running for public office! It has rarely been so clear about how much we all want to end sexual violence. Yet our public dialog seems to indicate that, in spite of our efforts, we have come only slightly closer to that goal than we were 35 years ago when rape crisis centers opened in Minnesota; 22 years ago when civil commitment began; when the sex offender sentencing guidelines grid was developed, or when sex offender probation caseloads were decreased, or when funding for intensive supervision began. Public outcry has driven us to put many resources into the management of those who have caused harm yet it appears we may be missing the mark – if that mark is about ending sexual violence.

The SVPN meeting will feature a dialog with:

• and Jannine Hébert MA, LP, MSOP Executive Clinical Director

We will explore how effective, reasoned and evidence based approaches to the management and treatment of those who have committed sex offenses blends with emerging conversations about preventing the perpetration of sexual violence. We want to support thoughtful, respectful and productive public discourse that ultimately may help us prevent child sexual abuse and sexual violence.
